Taliban insurgents launched a massive assault on the northern city of Kunduz Monday, seizing a courthouse, a hospital and other government buildings, and freeing hundreds of inmates from a prison, despite a series of battles with government forces.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told The Associated Press that "Kunduz city has collapsed into the hands of the Taliban."
"Security forces in Kunduz were prepared for an attack, but not one of this size, and not one that was coordinated in 10 different locations at the same time," Sediqqi said.
"With capturing of police compound and governor's office in Kunduz, the whole province fell to our hands,” the Taliban's spokesman said Monday on his Twitter account.
The Taliban used social media to claim the "conquest" of Kunduz and reassure residents that the extremist group -- responsible for the vast majority of nearly 5,000 civilian casualties in the first half of this year, according to the United Nations -- came in peace.
The fast-moving assault took military and intelligence agencies by surprise as the insurgents descended on the city. It marked the first time the insurgents have seized a major urban area since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001.

No one has died in the current outbreak, which is limited to Morris Park, health officials said. Patients in the current cluster live or work in the neighborhood and range in age from 45 to 75; all are currently hospitalized, authorities said.
Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said the city was working to determine the source of the outbreak and taking immediate steps to protect the people who live and work in the area. Bassett urged anyone with flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough and headache, to seek care immediately.
She said the first case was reported Sept. 21 and the other six cases were reported over the next six days. Environmental scientists visited all cooling towers in the affected area over the weekend and took samples; results on the samples are pending.

Earlier this month, A woman accused of throwing her baby out of a four-story bathroom window in Queens told authorities that an evil spirit had taken over the boy, according to court papers Monday.

MMR on Pope Francis in NYC
1. Meeting with clergy sex abuse survivors
Pope Francis will meet with victims of clergy sexual abuse Sunday, according to two American Catholic leaders.
The Vatican said it would not confirm such a meeting until after it happens.
Asked for details at a press briefing on Saturday, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that historically such meetings are never announced publicly in advance, out of respect for the nature of the meeting.
The Pope has met with abuse survivors before. His first meeting with victims was at the Vatican in July 2014. Pope Benedict XVI held such meetings at least five times during his papacy, according to bishopaccountability.org
2. Meeting with the bishops
Pope Francis has a morning visit with bishops at St. Martin's Chapel at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. Philly has been battered by two grand jury reports detailing clergy sexual abuse of children, budgetary woes, closing parishes and shuttering schools.
