Police Looking For Man Who Punched Clerk In Face Over Swisher Sweet Cigar

Lakewood, CA
 - A 23-year-old store clerk suffered permanent damage to her eye after a customer sucker punched her in the face over a $1.41 cigar.

It happened three weeks ago at a Chevron in California when a man walked up to the counter to buy a 1.41 Swisher Sweets cigar with only one dollar. When the clerk, Yadira Lara, told the man that wasn’t enough money, he became belligerent.
“He just says, ‘Well, this is all I have….(expletive) whatever.’ And I was like, ‘You need to get out of the store.’ I was like, ‘I’m sorry.’ And he tries to snatch it,” said Lara.
In response, the man reached across the counter and sucker punched the clerk in the face before leaving unhindered by any of the other customers inside the store who witnessed the entire incident.
“I just blacked out for awhile, just looking for my glasses,” Velma recalled. The punch may leave her blind, as it did further damage to an eye injury she suffered as a child. Lara said she wishes none of this ever happened, but hopes police are able to quickly capture the suspect.
Police have have released surveillance footage to help them identify the man. Anyone with any information is asked to call the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at 562-623-3500. Anonymous tips can be called into LA Crime Stopped at 800-222-TIPS, by texting the letters TIPLA plus a tip to CRIMES (274637).

Government shutdown: Get up to speed in 20 questions

(CNN) -- So what happens now that a shutdown is in place?
Republicans and Democrats couldn't agree on a spending plan for the fiscal year that started Tuesday as they wrangled over Obamacare, leaving federal coffers short. Here's a quick Q&A to get you caught up on what happened and what to expect:
1. Why did the government shut down?
Congress has one key duty in the Constitution -- pass spending bills that fund the government. If it doesn't, most functions of government -- from funding agencies to paying out small business loans and processing passport requests -- grinds to a halt. But some services, like Social Security, air traffic control and active military pay, will continue to be funded. Oh, and Congress still gets paid, too.
2. Why does it have to pass a spending bill in the middle of the year?It may be the middle of the calendar year, but the government's fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30.
3. What was the holdup?
House Republicans insist any new spending bill include provisions to either defund, derail or otherwise chip away at Obamacare. Senate Democrats are just as insistent that it doesn't.
4. How is Obamacare tied to the spending bill?
The health care law isn't directly tied to funding the government, but it's being used as a bargaining chip. A group of Republicans, led by freshman Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, believe the president's signature domestic policy achievement is so bad for the country that it is worth disrupting government funding to undercut it.
5. What are some of the objections to Obamacare?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the actual name of the law, requires all Americans to have health insurance. Opponents say it'll hurt employers and amounts to overreach by the federal government. Some have also criticized the medical device tax that's part of the law, saying that by imposing such a tax, it's basically sending jobs overseas.
6. What's the Democrats' defense?
They say the law will expand access to health care and help rein in the rising costs of coverage. Obamacare prevents those with pre-existing medical conditions from being denied health insurance, and proponents say those who have health insurance will no longer have to indirectly pay for those who show up in emergency rooms uninsured.

NYC Motorcycle Attack Update: NYPD identifies biker who allegedly assaulted SUV driver

(CBS) NEW YORK - The New York City Police Department has identified a suspect who bashed the window of a man driving with his family on a New York City highway Sunday after a group of motorcycles surrounded the SUV driver, reports CBS New York.
The suspect, who allegedly bashed his helmet in the front side window of Alexian Lien's car before pulling him out of the car and beating him in front of his wife and child, is reportedly expected to surrender Friday.
Although the incident was caught on a high definition helmet video, police are still trying to identify others involved in the Manhattan's West Side highway chase.
Lien, 33, was driving in a Range Rover with his wife and 2-year-old daughter when a group of bikers surrounded him on the highway. The father reportedly ran over Edwin Mieses, one of the bikers, in an attempt to get away from the mob. Mieses' wife said that her husband has been paralyzed from the waist down.
The confrontation reportedly began when one of the bikers slowed down in front of Lien's car, forcing him to break. Within seconds, the other bikers surrounded the vehicle, and that's when lien hit the gas, injuring Mieses as he drove away.
Lien's wife said Thursday that her husband was forced to do what he did: "Our fear for our lives was confirmed when the incident ended with the ruthless and brutal attack on my husband, me, and most importantly, our two-year-old child. We know in our hearts that we could not have done anything differently."
Mieses's family has reportedly hired celebrity attorney Gloria Allred.
The only person criminally charged so far is Christopher Cruz. The 28-year-old was arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and unlawful imprisonment. His defense lawyer has denied all allegations.
